Our DIY Weekend
As spring is quickly approaching, it is time for our annual spring-cleaning! This year we decided to tackle our bonus room. Our bonus room (aka the guest room) has not changed once since we moved into the house ten years ago. The room was in need of a new paint job, organization, and dust control.
For years, this room has been our junk room. If you didn’t want it or it didn’t fit in your own room, you put it in the bonus room. But as the kids are getting older and moving out, we decided that this space would be better suited as a guest room and library.
Not only did we want to redo this room, but we also wanted to implement some cleaning and organization ideas from our Pinterest account! The first thing we did was to clean! We wanted to deep clean this room because after ten years of wear and tear there are always some missed spots. I love cleaning, but sometimes I am not in the mood, especially when I am cleaning areas above my head that end up making even more of a mess. Aka, the fan. The ceiling fan is always the culprit for dust, and lets face it I often forget to clean this area. But low and behold, on Pinterest I found a great idea that I just had to try. You take an old pillowcase and put it around blade. Not only does it wipe the dust right off, but also it contains the mess.
After cleaning, we decided to paint the room. I love the look of a nicely painted room but sometimes that freshly painted smell is such a headache. So what did we do? We found on Pinterest that you can put vanilla extract in the paint without hurting the paint or color and it helps eliminate the smell. We tried it and we thought it worked well. I will definitely do this in more diy home painting projects.
We crossed off a few projects from our “spring improvement” list and can’t wait to tackle the rest.
